Completing your studies

/

Students of undergraduate study programs who complete their studies without preparing and defending a thesis complete the study program when they have successfully fulfilled all obligations prescribed by the study program.

In this case, the student submits to the MFUM Secretariat, Taborska 8, Maribor, the Application for confirmation of completed undergraduate studies. The application must be accompanied by a certificate from the MFUM Library confirming that all obligations have been settled and a certificate confirming the return of the locker key, which the student obtains from the MFUM information desk.

If the student also wishes to have additional information entered in the Diploma Supplement, they must complete the Application for entering additional study-related information about the student and submit it together with the application for confirmation of completed undergraduate studies. Copies of supporting documents must also be enclosed with the application. The MFUM Senate decision on what is considered the student's additional achievements during their studies can be found here (the decision applies from October 1, 2015 onwards). The same certificate may be used only once for entry in the Diploma Supplement if it concerns a practical placement abroad and the exchange period does not exceed the compulsory weeks of practical training at MF UM (decision).

On the basis of a prior system notification from the electronic records, the Student Affairs Office enables the student to complete the Study Satisfaction Survey in AIPS. Once the student has completed the survey, the application or notification from the electronic records on all obligations completed by the student is forwarded to the dean of the member faculty. Within 5 working days of receiving the application or notification from the office, the dean of the member faculty issues a decision on the successful completion of undergraduate studies, which is the basis for issuing the certificate of graduation.

The certificate of graduation replaces the diploma until the diplomas are awarded. Instructions of the Medical Chamber of Slovenia regarding internship.

Article 27 of the Rules on Knowledge Testing and Assessment at the University of Maribor No. A4/2009-41 AG, concerning grade improvement in individual course units, stipulates that before completing their studies a student has the right to retake the exam in all course units already passed if they wish to improve the grade in a particular course unit.

For study programs that end with a thesis, completion of studies means the thesis, whereas for undergraduate study programs that end without a final thesis, studies are completed with the last completed obligation (exam).

A student therefore cannot improve the grade of the last course unit (exam), which is comparable to not being able to improve the grade of the thesis, but may lodge an objection against the grade obtained in the last course unit (exam), in this case, however, immediately or at the latest before the expiry of the deadline set for verifying the data on completion of studies in the official records.

The above also applies when a student wishes to improve the grade in a course unit already passed before the last completed obligation, if they complete the last obligation before the exam date for the course unit in which they wish to improve the grade is announced.

Students' rights must be equal, regardless of whether they complete their studies with a thesis or with the last completed obligation (exam).

The above also applies if the student registered for grade improvement before completing the last obligation, if the exam date for the improvement falls after the date on which the last obligation was completed. A student therefore cannot improve a grade at or after the last completed course unit (exam), which is comparable to not being able to improve a grade at or after the thesis.

If a student has active student status in the year in which they graduate, after graduating from the integrated master's study program in General Medicine they retain student status until September 30 of the current academic year, in accordance with Article 70 of the Higher Education Act (Official Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, No. 32/12 – official consolidated text, 40/12 – ZUJF, 57/12 – ZPCP-2D, 109/12, 85/14, 75/16, 61/17 – ZUPŠ and 65/17).

A student may renounce their status after graduation at any time by submitting a request to renounce status at MF UM to the Student Affairs Office.

No later than four years from the day the UM Senate approved the topic of their doctoral dissertation, doctoral students must submit the completed doctoral dissertation to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office, together with the report on the similarity check against other works and the signed statement of the supervisor (and co-supervisor) on the adequacy of the doctoral dissertation and of the publications of its findings.

A doctoral student must have, before submitting the doctoral dissertation, at least one publication from the doctoral work as first author. Relevant publications are scientific articles published in journals with a JCR impact factor that rank in the top three quartiles by impact factor, and patents with full examination.

The candidate prepares the doctoral dissertation in accordance with the Rules on Doctoral Studies at UM as amended. The form of the doctoral dissertation is prescribed in Annex 5 of the aforementioned rules, taking into account the general UM corporate identity guidelines. Before submitting the printed version of the doctoral dissertation proposal, the candidate sends it for a technical review to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office (by email to jasmina.bedrac@um.si).

IMPORTANT!

When the final thesis has been prepared and approved from a technical point of view by the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office, the candidate submits it to the Digital Library of the University of Maribor (DKUM), where, among other things, the similarity of the final thesis with other works is checked. The candidate must deliver the report on the similarity check against other works to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office together with the submission of the doctoral dissertation proposal. Instructions on preparing and submitting electronic final theses and on checking the similarity of a final thesis with other works The candidate submits the completed doctoral dissertation proposal to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office (as a rule in 4 softbound copies, or 5 copies if the candidate has a co-supervisor). At the end of the doctoral dissertation proposal, the candidate also adds Annex 4 – the doctoral student's statement on authorship and identity of the printed and electronic versions of the doctoral dissertation. The supervisor's/co-supervisor's statement on the suitability of the doctoral dissertation is also a compulsory attachment on submission

If, during the assessment of the doctoral dissertation, it is found that the dissertation needs to be supplemented or corrected, the new version must be uploaded to DKUM again, the similarity check against other works must be carried out and a new report attached. New versions of the doctoral dissertation must also be attached, together with the supervisor's/co-supervisor's statement on the suitability of the revised doctoral dissertation.

Within 14 days of a successful defense at the latest, the doctoral candidate must submit 5 hardbound copies of the doctoral dissertation and the electronic version of the doctoral dissertation for publication in DKUM to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office.

At the same time, the doctoral graduate also submits the statement on authorship and identity of the printed and electronic versions of the doctoral dissertation and the statement on publication of personal data (Annex 4). The statement on authorship and identity of the printed and electronic versions of the doctoral dissertation is bound into the printed copy of the doctoral dissertation.

“I completed part of my studies on an Erasmus exchange in Split, followed by an Erasmus traineeship in Vienna. Both experiences gave me the chance to explore the cities in depth, meet new people and form friendships that will last a lifetime. On the clinical wards, I saw procedures that are performed less often at home, and a longer placement in ophthalmology confirmed my wish to specialize in the field.

I also tried my hand at research, which further broadened my professional perspective. The exchanges helped me grow both personally and professionally: I became more independent and open-minded, improved my foreign language skills and felt even more confident about my career path.

It is an experience every medical student should have.”

“My exchange at the medical university in Innsbruck was truly unforgettable. Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, is a beautiful, vibrant student city surrounded by mountains. At the start, we were welcomed with a reception where I quickly got to know the other Erasmus students. I completed my 4th year there, attended the useful Sono4u ultrasound course and took additional placements in gynecology, plastic surgery and ENT, gaining valuable practical experience. The professors were friendly and approachable, and the faculty also offered a year-long German course; I recommend having at least B1-level German before going on exchange. The city itself is perfect for skiing, cycling, running and climbing, and is also known for having one of Europe's largest climbing walls. I will certainly be happy to return to Innsbruck, as it has become my second home.

The Erasmus Student Network organized trips to Salzburg, Vienna, Verona and Neuschwanstein, as well as numerous sporting events.”

“When I went on Erasmus in my 5th year, I had no idea how much six months in Graz would change me. I wanted to see how medicine is practiced elsewhere, improve my German and step outside my routine, but I gained so much more: new friends, a wealth of knowledge and unforgettable moments.

The first few days were more difficult: I felt like a first-year student in a white coat. The hospital was huge, everyone spoke quickly, and I struggled to catch every word. But the students and supervisors were incredibly friendly, so I soon joined ward rounds and procedures and learned a great deal in practice. Medical German seemed daunting at first, but practice was the best teacher, and after a few weeks I was communicating confidently.

The best part was meeting students from all over the world. We cooked, studied and explored Graz together. The exchange taught me things I would never have experienced at home. I became more independent, confident and open-minded.

If you are thinking about Erasmus, go for it. It will not always be easy, but it will always be worth it. ”
