Publication of exam dates

Exam dates for the current academic year are published on the website of the Academic Information Subsystem (AIPS) of the University of Maribor. In accordance with the Rules on Knowledge Testing and Assessment at UM and its amendments, the list of exam dates for the entire academic year is published by November 15 of the current academic year at the latest.

  • Students register for an exam at least 6 days before the exam date.
  • Exam registration is electronic (AIPS), including for exams that have to be paid for.
  • Exam attempts that are subject to a fee (the 4th and subsequent attempts, exams before a committee, exams for persons without student status) are charged in accordance with the UM price list for the current academic year.
  • The invoice for the exam attempt is issued on the day of the exam and sent to the student by post to their home address.
  • Deregistration from an exam is possible no later than 4 days before the exam date. If you deregister electronically in time, no invoice for the exam is issued.

If a student did not take an exam for a justifiable reason and did not deregister in time, the exam is considered to have been deregistered in time, if within 3 working days after the exam date the student submits appropriate written evidence to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office (medical certificate, accident, etc.). The administrative staff decide on the adequacy of the evidence within 3 days.

A student who, without a justifiable reason, does not attend the exam on the day set for them, or does not deregister in time, may take the exam only at the second following exam date.

Registration for individual midterm assessments in the composite courses Introduction to Medicine and Environmental Influences and Health (for the General Medicine program) and Introduction to Dental Medicine, Clinical Medicine 1 and Clinical Medicine 2 (for the Dental Medicine program) is done electronically via the following link.

The registration deadline for a midterm assessment is the same as for exam registration, i.e. no later than 6 days before the midterm assessment.

The deregistration deadline for a midterm assessment is no later than 4 days before the midterm assessment.

Registration and deregistration are possible ONLY electronically, via the link above.

When improving the grade of an individual midterm assessment, you must manually submit the registration form, in accordance with the registration/deregistration deadlines stated above. The registration form must be submitted to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office (or by email to referat.mf@um.si) no later than 6 days before the date of the midterm assessment – by post or in person at the office during office hours.

After passing ALL midterm assessments, you must register via the AIPS application for the scheduled exam date of the umbrella course (Introduction to Medicine, Environmental Influences and Health, Introduction to Dental Medicine, Clinical Medicine 1, Clinical Medicine 2) so that the overall grade can be recorded.

Midterm assessment results will be published on the MFUM e-noticeboard.

Please kindly observe the above.

A student may complete the prescribed study obligations and exams of course units of a higher year once they have completed all obligations of the current year (60 ECTS credits), with the prior consent of the course unit coordinator, if the material and organizational working conditions allow it. At the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office, the student obtains a certificate confirming that all obligations to date have been completed. The student delivers the certificate to the course coordinator, who, on the basis of this certificate, can sign the consent to take on obligations of a higher year. Before the start of the semester in which the higher-year course is taught, the student delivers the signed consent to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office, where the individual obligation is assigned to them in AIPS.

In accordance with Article 27 of the Rules on Knowledge Testing and Assessment at UM (UPB1), before completing their studies a student has the right to retake the exam in all course units already passed if they wish to improve the grade in a particular course unit. An individual exam may be retaken once, as an exam before a committee. If the student obtains a lower grade when retaking, the original, i.e. higher, grade stands. To improve a grade, students register using the grade improvement registration form, which they submit to the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office no later than 6 days before the exam date. The deadline for deregistering from the exam is no later than 4 days before the exam. In this case, deregistration from the exam is possible via the AIPS system.

After defending the final thesis, or after passing the last exam if the study program ends without a final thesis, a student can no longer retake exams or improve grades in course units already passed, even if they registered for grade improvement before the date of the final thesis defense or the date of the last exam.

By agreement with the coordinator or teacher of the course unit, the last exam of the study program before graduation or before completion of studies may be taken outside the scheduled exam dates.

In such a case, the student obtains the relevant certificate on taking the last exam at the MF UM Academic and Student Affairs Office and submits a request for exam registration with the agreed date, on the basis of which the exam registration is arranged.

If a student fails the last exam arranged in this way, they must register for a scheduled exam date for the next attempt.

Article 27 of the Rules on Knowledge Testing and Assessment at the University of Maribor No. A4/2009-41 AG, concerning grade improvement in individual course units, stipulates that before completing their studies a student has the right to retake the exam in all course units already passed if they wish to improve the grade in a particular course unit.

For study programs that end with a thesis, completion of studies means the thesis, whereas for undergraduate study programs that end without a final thesis, studies are completed with the last completed obligation (exam).

A student therefore cannot improve the grade of the last course unit (exam), which is comparable to not being able to improve the grade of the thesis, but may lodge an objection against the grade obtained in the last course unit (exam), in this case, however, immediately or at the latest before the expiry of the deadline set for verifying the data on completion of studies in the official records.

The above also applies when a student wishes to improve the grade in a course unit already passed before the last completed obligation, if they complete the last obligation before the exam date for the course unit in which they wish to improve the grade is announced.

Students' rights must be equal, regardless of whether they complete their studies with a thesis or with the last completed obligation (exam).

The above also applies if the student registered for grade improvement before completing the last obligation, if the exam date for the improvement falls after the date on which the last obligation was completed. A student therefore cannot improve a grade at or after the last completed course unit (exam), which is comparable to not being able to improve a grade at or after the thesis.

“I completed part of my studies on an Erasmus exchange in Split, followed by an Erasmus traineeship in Vienna. Both experiences gave me the chance to explore the cities in depth, meet new people and form friendships that will last a lifetime. On the clinical wards, I saw procedures that are performed less often at home, and a longer placement in ophthalmology confirmed my wish to specialize in the field.

I also tried my hand at research, which further broadened my professional perspective. The exchanges helped me grow both personally and professionally: I became more independent and open-minded, improved my foreign language skills and felt even more confident about my career path.

It is an experience every medical student should have.”

“My exchange at the medical university in Innsbruck was truly unforgettable. Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, is a beautiful, vibrant student city surrounded by mountains. At the start, we were welcomed with a reception where I quickly got to know the other Erasmus students. I completed my 4th year there, attended the useful Sono4u ultrasound course and took additional placements in gynecology, plastic surgery and ENT, gaining valuable practical experience. The professors were friendly and approachable, and the faculty also offered a year-long German course; I recommend having at least B1-level German before going on exchange. The city itself is perfect for skiing, cycling, running and climbing, and is also known for having one of Europe's largest climbing walls. I will certainly be happy to return to Innsbruck, as it has become my second home.

The Erasmus Student Network organized trips to Salzburg, Vienna, Verona and Neuschwanstein, as well as numerous sporting events.”

“When I went on Erasmus in my 5th year, I had no idea how much six months in Graz would change me. I wanted to see how medicine is practiced elsewhere, improve my German and step outside my routine, but I gained so much more: new friends, a wealth of knowledge and unforgettable moments.

The first few days were more difficult: I felt like a first-year student in a white coat. The hospital was huge, everyone spoke quickly, and I struggled to catch every word. But the students and supervisors were incredibly friendly, so I soon joined ward rounds and procedures and learned a great deal in practice. Medical German seemed daunting at first, but practice was the best teacher, and after a few weeks I was communicating confidently.

The best part was meeting students from all over the world. We cooked, studied and explored Graz together. The exchange taught me things I would never have experienced at home. I became more independent, confident and open-minded.

If you are thinking about Erasmus, go for it. It will not always be easy, but it will always be worth it. ”
