Department of Microbiology

The Department of Microbiology of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maribor focuses on the study of microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites and their impact on human health. The emphasis is on the diagnosis and treatment of infectious diseases, research into the mechanisms of infection and antimicrobial resistance, and the prevention and control of epidemics. Students learn basic microbiological methods such as microscopy, the cultivation of microorganisms, identification and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. The Department offers both theoretical lectures and practical laboratory classes in which students develop laboratory skills. The Department participates in research that contributes to advances in microbiology and to the development of new diagnostic methods and therapeutic approaches.
