About the Faculty of Medicine

A higher education and research institution committed to educating healthcare professionals in medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy and biomedical technology.
/

Mission

The Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor (MF UM) is a higher education and research institution committed to educating healthcare professionals in medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy and biomedical technology. With an interdisciplinary approach, scientific excellence and ethical responsibility, we contribute to the development of science, healthcare and the well-being of society.

Vision

The vision of MF UM is to remain or become a respected, sought-after, established, safe, internationally oriented and recognizable teaching and research institution with elements of excellence, embedded in its local and wider environment, and known for the knowledge and competence of the physicians it has educated, of the teachers, researchers and non-teaching staff who work there, and for the moral standards that distinguish it.
Building of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Maribor

The MF UM management will ensure the balanced development of all departments and institutes, as well as the development of our clinical teaching sites. Through intensive international exchanges of students and teachers, we will enable both students and teachers to gain additional knowledge and experience. An important task for the future is to intensify research, especially basic research, which we will achieve in cooperation with other faculties of the University of Maribor that are already partners in the postgraduate study program in Biomedical Technology, in cooperation with the University Medical Centre Maribor and in cooperation with our partner faculties in the European Union. MF UM will continue to strive for the continuous renewal of its study programs in terms of modernization, in cooperation with students and taking into account the guidelines, drawn up by international organizations such as AMSE (Association of Medical Schools in Europe) and AMEE (Association for Medical Education in Europe).

Quod serimus, metimus, quod damus, accipimus.

What we sow, we reap; what we give, we receive.

Core values and tasks

At MF UM, we are guided by clear and firmly anchored values that form the foundation of our work and development. We direct our efforts toward being:

  • a high-quality, modern and open teaching and research institution,
  • an environment that lives and practices the highest ethical and moral standards,
  • a community of equality and partnership among all participants,
  • a place that fosters academic freedom, critical thinking and creativity.

Our key task is to educate well-rounded and socially responsible professionals. We train students not only for top-level professional work but also shape them as people, with a strong sense of ethics, integrity and compassion.

We are proud to offer study programs in medicine, dental medicine, pharmacy and biomedical technology (postgraduate studies), which enable students to develop competencies comparable to those at the best European higher education institutions. Our programs are based on the Blue Book of standards and norms for physicians and dentists and on the professional foundations of pharmaceutical practice. We design their content in line with international guidelines and the latest scientific and professional findings. We believe that knowledge supported by values changes the world.

History

Reasons for establishing a second medical faculty in Slovenia

Initiatives to establish a second medical faculty in Slovenia date back to the seventies of the last century, when Maribor General Hospital was already cooperating with the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Ljubljana. The first students completed clinical practicals in Maribor at the end of 1980, and in 1990 the hospital obtained the status of a teaching hospital.

Despite many years of effort, the Faculty of Medicine of the University of Maribor was officially established on October 2, 2003 by the Decree on the Reorganization of the University of Maribor, adopted unanimously by the National Assembly of the Republic of Slovenia. In December of the same year, the Council for Higher Education of the Republic of Slovenia approved the university study program General Medicine and announced 80 places for the first students.

The Faculty Senate first met in November 2003 and elected Prof. Dr. Ivan Krajnc, MD, as the first dean. After the first students enrolled in the 2004/2005 academic year, the first session of the MF Academic Assembly was convened, at which Prof. Dr. Ivan Krajnc, MD, was re-elected dean.

The establishment of the Faculty was also driven by the growing need for physicians: data from the Ministry of Health showed that by 2020 Slovenia would need at least 25% more physicians than were available. Comparisons with other European countries revealed a significant staffing gap which, due to an aging workforce and work overload, could no longer be closed without an additional educational center for the medical profession.

“I completed part of my studies on an Erasmus exchange in Split, followed by an Erasmus traineeship in Vienna. Both experiences gave me the chance to explore the cities in depth, meet new people and form friendships that will last a lifetime. On the clinical wards, I saw procedures that are performed less often at home, and a longer placement in ophthalmology confirmed my wish to specialize in the field.

I also tried my hand at research, which further broadened my professional perspective. The exchanges helped me grow both personally and professionally: I became more independent and open-minded, improved my foreign language skills and felt even more confident about my career path.

It is an experience every medical student should have.”

“My exchange at the medical university in Innsbruck was truly unforgettable. Innsbruck, the capital of Tyrol, is a beautiful, vibrant student city surrounded by mountains. At the start, we were welcomed with a reception where I quickly got to know the other Erasmus students. I completed my 4th year there, attended the useful Sono4u ultrasound course and took additional placements in gynecology, plastic surgery and ENT, gaining valuable practical experience. The professors were friendly and approachable, and the faculty also offered a year-long German course; I recommend having at least B1-level German before going on exchange. The city itself is perfect for skiing, cycling, running and climbing, and is also known for having one of Europe's largest climbing walls. I will certainly be happy to return to Innsbruck, as it has become my second home.

The Erasmus Student Network organized trips to Salzburg, Vienna, Verona and Neuschwanstein, as well as numerous sporting events.”

“When I went on Erasmus in my 5th year, I had no idea how much six months in Graz would change me. I wanted to see how medicine is practiced elsewhere, improve my German and step outside my routine, but I gained so much more: new friends, a wealth of knowledge and unforgettable moments.

The first few days were more difficult: I felt like a first-year student in a white coat. The hospital was huge, everyone spoke quickly, and I struggled to catch every word. But the students and supervisors were incredibly friendly, so I soon joined ward rounds and procedures and learned a great deal in practice. Medical German seemed daunting at first, but practice was the best teacher, and after a few weeks I was communicating confidently.

The best part was meeting students from all over the world. We cooked, studied and explored Graz together. The exchange taught me things I would never have experienced at home. I became more independent, confident and open-minded.

If you are thinking about Erasmus, go for it. It will not always be easy, but it will always be worth it. ”
