About the library

Development and mission

The MF UM Library was founded on September 7, 2005, and opened to the public on November 23, 2005. The biomedical materials held by the library are fully catalogued in the COBISS+ system.

The library is open to the public, although, given the type of literature, it is intended primarily for medical students, higher education teachers and associates, and staff of the University of Maribor.

Library registration

The faculty libraries of the University of Maribor and the Maribor University Library share a single membership card, so users can join any UM faculty library or the UKM and then use all UM libraries with this card. Library members may be full-time students, part-time students (with valid status) or postgraduate students. The membership fee is included in the tuition fee and is paid upon enrollment in the first or a subsequent year of study. Other library users (staff, students without status, secondary school students, etc.) pay an annual membership fee when registering with the library. In this case, the annual membership fee is not tied to the academic year but is valid for one year from the date of payment. To register, users need:

an identity document,
a student ID card.

Borrowing materials

We recommend reserving materials in advance as far as possible via the online service COBISS+ with the My COBISS profile, the mobile app mCOBISS, by email at knjiznica.mf@um.si or by phone at 02/2345850. When the materials are ready for collection, we will notify you by email. You can still choose to have materials sent by post; this service is subject to a fee.

Returning materials

Please return materials at the designated place in the library.

Reading room

In the reading room, users carefully put away the library materials they have used themselves or hand them over to the librarian.

Anatomical model collection

The collection of models of organs and bones of the human body may only be used in the library upon presentation of a membership card or student ID card. Catalog of the Collection of Models of Organs and Bones of the Human Body.

Purchasing materials

Materials published by MF UM can also be purchased in the library. The list of books is published on the library website.

How to use the MF UM Library

At every visit, users must identify themselves with a membership or student ID card, which is not transferable. Users must report the loss of a card to the library and cover the cost of a replacement card themselves.

At any one time, users may borrow a maximum of five items (5 books), for which they are financially liable.

The loan period is one month, although in the case of high demand for the materials it may be shorter (7 or 14 days).

Users may renew borrowed materials in person, by phone or by email up to three times (3x). Renewal must be done before the loan period expires. Reserved materials cannot be renewed, nor can materials whose loan period has already expired.

Users can reserve desired but currently unavailable books themselves via the My Library service, in person at the library, by phone or by email at knjiznica.mf@um.si.

Borrowed materials may not be lent to other persons, even if they are registered with the library.

After collecting library materials, users must point out any damage to the librarian; otherwise, they will be held responsible for it on return.

If a user loses materials, they must replace them with new ones. If the materials are no longer available on the market, the user pays compensation for them.

If the loan period is exceeded, the user pays reminder fees according to the applicable price list.

Users may borrow library materials for home use or for use in the reading room. Quiet and a study atmosphere prevail in the reading room; users must switch off their mobile phones before entering.

Reading-room materials may be used only in the reading room. They include a few copies each of highly sought-after, usually more recent literature (new textbooks and textbooks available in a single copy, journals, non-book materials such as diskettes and CD-ROMs, research reports, doctoral dissertations). Reading-room materials also include dictionaries, lexicons, handbooks, encyclopedias and standards.

Books used in the reading room must be carefully put away by the user.

The library provides interlibrary loan services for MF UM staff and for other Slovenian libraries.

At the end of their studies or upon withdrawal from the faculty, the user–student must return all borrowed materials. The library issues a certificate, which the student submits to the Academic and Student Affairs Office.

In the event of serious breaches of the library rules (theft, intentional damage to materials), the user must pay for the material damage caused and, until the costs incurred are settled, loses the right to visit and use all libraries of the University of Maribor.

Library materials

COBISS and electronic resources

All materials held by the library are fully catalogued in COBISS. Users search the COBISS/OPAC catalog independently and, if they have difficulties, turn to the staff for professional assistance. Study materials are available in print and electronic form. One copy of each printed item is reserved for reading-room use and is kept in the Teaching Collection.

Users of the MF UM Library have access to all ELECTRONIC information resources, to which the University of Maribor subscribes.

Among others, the following databases are available: MEDLINE, ScienceDirect, Wiley InterScience, SAGE journals online, SpringerLink, CINAHL, Cab abstracts, Emerald, FSTA, JSTOR, ProQuest, PsycArticles, Scopus, Ulrich's periodical directory.

Students and staff of the University of Maribor can access electronic information resources via remote access, which is available from the website of the Maribor University Library.

The MF UM Library maintains bibliographies of MF UM researchers. Bibliographies are compiled on the basis of the materials submitted, which are also archived in the library (photocopies). Bibliographic units are assigned a typology based on the Typology of Documents/Works for Maintaining Bibliographies in the COBISS System: authors/researchers are responsible for the correct typological classification of units.

The program available on the Researchers' Bibliographies website enables printing of the personal bibliographies of researchers and of professional and technical staff who are registered with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science and Technology (MVŠZT) and have their own code, provided that their bibliographic units are included in the COBISS system. Data on bibliographic units are retrieved from the COBIB union database.

For its users, the MF UM Library carries out subject searches in specialized databases.

To check whether a doctoral topic is suitable for a dissertation, send the following information by email to knjiznica.mf@um.si:

the title of the doctoral dissertation in Slovenian and English,
five keywords in Slovenian and English, ranked by importance,
an abstract in Slovenian and English.

The library provides interlibrary loan services for MF UM staff and for other Slovenian libraries. It supplies libraries with materials from its own holdings (books and photocopies of articles). Orders are accepted by email or in person at the library.

The ordering party (library) for interlibrary loan must be listed in the COBIB register of Slovenian libraries.
Interlibrary loan is not provided from libraries in Maribor.

MF UM employees pay interlibrary loan costs from their cost centers. The price includes postage and handling costs and, for loans from abroad, also customs duty and an international reply coupon. Loans from abroad are arranged through larger Slovenian libraries, e.g. the Maribor University Library or the Central Medical Library in Ljubljana.

Anatomy collection

Collection of models of organs and bones of the human body

The collection of models of organs and bones of the human body is located in the MF UM Library. The collection consists of models of individual organs of the human body made of synthetic material in natural or enlarged size. The collection may only be used in the library upon presentation of a membership card or student ID card.

Models may not be taken out of the library, and they cannot be borrowed for home use. After completing your studies, please return the assembled models to us so that they can be lent out.

RESEARCHERS' BIBLIOGRAPHIES

The MF UM Library maintains bibliographies of MF UM researchers.
